Task 3B: Analysis of Suite of Idents

For this task, I am going to be analysis a suite of idents for the channel BBC Three that was released back in 2008 which it is going to be a case study of researching and explaining how and why a suite of idents might be designed with an reasoning.

i.  What the theme of the suite is

In terms of the theme of the suite of idents by the channel of BBC Three that were released back in 2008 are 'Threeworld' mainly because it is trying to target at a particular audience which is the core youths who are between the age of 16-34 year old.

ii.  How/why the theme appeals to the viewers (e.g. creating a particular tone to target a particular audience type)

The main reason why the theme of these BBC Three idents of intro and outro is appealing to the target audience of youths who are the viewers on the television mainly because it is creating a particular tone that is youthful and modern for them in a way.

iii. How they have used the same theme in different ways to create Brand Loyalty

For the theme of 'threeworld' of BBC Three's 2008 idents, it does create brand loyalty as the broadcasters need to keep the continuity going so the audience will be able to identify the channel easier but if they had different idents that wasn't relating to the channel, then it would impossible for the target audience to identify the channel.

iv.  Explain whether, how and why the idents are information-led or entertainment led

The suite of idents for the BBC Three, it does have a use of entertainment-led mainly because that it has animation that is being used rather than the use of recorded real-life footage as the audience is young and do not want to be bombard of information that the broadcaster could tell them about what is going to happen next (the name of the next programme) as this could bore them out and possibly switch off from the channel since they have short attention spans although there is a use of information-led being told through a voiceover that tells the audience of what programme is going to be shown next on the channel.

v.  Are the idents intended to be used at a particular time of day?

I would say that these suite of idents for the channel BBC Three is used for the evening as the target audience of youths will be at home from education of study for most of the day and would want to watch something that is entertaining to them rather than being bored through the very formal programme which are shown on the television.

vi.  Are idents intended to be used at a particular time of year?

All of these idents are intended to be used for the whole year but during the evening of the day mainly because the channel does not re-brand themselves in a way that it has Christmas programmes being shown to the audience instead since the channel normally shows entertainment, comedy and factual programmes.

vii.  What does the suite convey about the channel's Brand Identity – what meaning?

For the suite of idents that was created for the channel of BBC Three around the theme of 'Three-world', it is creating brand identity through three types which are: colour, typography and logo so I am going to explaining my reasons for this:

Typography: In terms of the typography, the word of 'three' is in lower case which it is telling the audience that the channel is very informal rather than formal channel like BBC One, Two and Four that were in capitals before it was changed although those channels are targeting at a different audience.

Colour: For the colour of the wording of 'three', it is covered in pink while the rest of it is in purple  which it is seen in the suite of idents for the channel of BBC Three mainly because it is very eye-catching and vibrant so it is easier to get the audience's (viewer's) attention which could allow them to stay with the channel and watch it again.

Logo: Normally with the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation), you will see it in the middle due to the audience knowing the circles' ident with the channel of BBC One but it is seen on the right-hand side although with BBC Logo, it tells the audience that they own this channel in a way.

viii.  How effective the design of the suite is in communicating (Visual information to a non-visual audience, appealing to a target audience; and the audience appreciating of desired tone)

I would say that the design of the suite of idents for the channel BBC Three is very effective in terms of communicating the right tone for the target audience because it is giving off an feeling that they can described in their own words but I would describe the tone of this channel is modern and youthful.

ix. Assess - How effective the design of the suite is (Typography, Pace, Density of Information, Brand Identity)

For this final question, I would say that the design of the suite of idents for the channel of BBC Three was effective because the use of Typography, Pace, Density of Information and Brand Identify was used correctly in a way that it is targeting the right type of audience who are going to be watching the channel on television.

x. Duration of each suite of idents last?

In terms of the duration of each suite of idents lasts for the channel BBC Three, it lasts for 20 seconds long for each one because normally, an ident is meant to last for 30 seconds long.
