Task 6A: Report on Feedback

So for Task 6A, I am going to be writing about the feedback that the client has given us through the YouTube comments in terms of suite of idents that we have made for him since the group needed to meet the brief''s deadline. Also, I am going to be analysing the survey results that I have sent out to my intended target audience for the idents that we have made:

1) The success of the product

In this section, I am going to be talking about the feedback that one of the idents had got from the client in terms of what he thought it and what can been improved exactly.

Here above, it is an screenshot of the comment that was made by the client on the rough cut of the Hands ident where he found it not too bad at all as he liked the animation in the video that was done by Lawrence who was working with the editor James but he did give us some constructed criticism which he felt that if we had to follow the storyboard idea for this particular ident, then it would have been a lot more better. Another thing that he added in this comment is that instead of creating an ident for the channel of CTK TV, we had created an ad for the channel which is not right as in the brief it does say that we are creating idents and not only that, he said the logo of CTK TV needed to be on there for at least for 3 seconds since the audience needed to get the brand recognition while giving them the time to read it so they could be persuade to watch the channel again in the near future.

So in conclusion, this is an fair analysis from the client as we can go and improve the idents on the editing software and make sure that there was no mistakes within the four idents when it does come to the final version when we upload it onto YouTube and putting on their portfolio.

2) The process of responding to their brief and working with the client

When our and other group had got the Unit 5/32: Working To An Brief and Ident Production brief for the first time while meeting with the client for the first time, we needed to read it carefully as there was work that needed to be done since the deadline was being set for it to be done but while doing this, we needed to make sure that we have meeting with the client in terms of the making the ident for example.

Stages of Pre-Production

Consultation

At first, we were given the brief that the whole class will be working on in different groups but after looking through the brief and checking to see if there was any concerns of what is required and then we met the client for the first time which David Pearson set the brief as an live one. During this meeting with the client for the first time, we decided to tell the client about our idea for one of suite of idents that we are planning to make for him so it does promote the college by making sure that the audience and students will have good enough reasons to come which he did give us some feedback.

Pitching

Before meeting the client for the second time to pitch our ideas to the camera, we need to make sure that the pre-production work is done so we can put in as a folder so the client can see of what is going to be happening in terms of making suite of idents for the college. This partculair folder of work needs to have:

  • Budget
  • Production planning
  • Possible solutions
  • Designs of the ident
  • Treatment
  • Problems of Heath and Safety
  • Resources
  • Production
By completing the pre-production work as a group is all good but we need to move on the production side where as a group, we need to decide when we are starting to shoot the suite of idents while getting the equipments and props needed to start the production so the group need to make sure that they will arrive at the location at the right time as well.

Post-Production

After completing the shooting of four idents, the editor within our group will start to edit the idents by doing the rough cuts of what it does look like without the effects and logos but after getting feedback, then the editor will be able to add into extra parts that are needed within the ident and then export as an mp4 video but we need to consult with the client.

Review and Distribution

Before we can upload it onto YouTube to generate some money through the views, we need to consult with the client to show the videos that we made to promote the college of Christ The King: St Mary's as David Pearson can give us feedback of what changes need to be made within the idents but if there is no changes need to be made and the client is happy with it, then it is possible that we can upload the videos onto YouTube which is a video platform that the target audience of 15-19 years old can see it.

3) The effectiveness of your group organisation

I would say that during the production stage in terms of making these suite of idents for the client, the group's organisation was mostly okay for most of the time as everyone knew what jobs they had to do of what needed to be done since we needed to meet the deadline that was set on Unit 5/32: Ident Production and Working to an Brief although at times, the team did look a little shaky like for example: during in one of Barton's lesson, I had forgot to book out the sports hall and PE Kit before the lesson in which he was slightly concerned about this so myself, Lawrence and Rosie went to the sports hall to see one of the PE staff to see if it was okay for us to film in there and borrow a kit and football as well in which, they said it was ok to do this and return it to them after we had done the filming where we did do this.

Task 5C: 3rd Meeting with the client

8th June 2017

On this day, we had met up with the client in terms of getting some feedback on the rough cut on the one of the idents that the group have made during the production stage which was the hands ident while getting the final version of the suite of idents done as well.

Meeting deadlines; (weekly diary of progress to schedule)

I feel that we are completely on schedule to meeting the deadline of 9th June by handing the work in on time as our teacher needs to mark it since there will be no resubmission for the work so not only myself and other people in the team need to make sure that the work was done and checked correctly.

ii. Liaison with client (Meeting)

I said above, we met with the client to get feedback on one of the idents which was the hands version where he felt that it wasn't too bad at all but there was some improvements that we can make to this like for example: if we had to follow the storyboard idea for the ident that we originally set out, then it would have been more effective. Not only that, we had created an ad for the college instead of an ident for the channel so we were not following the normal convention for this since we had been taught about this in the lesson leading up to the stages of pre-production

iii. Client Negotiation; (changes and compromises made in discussion based on rough cuts)

After getting the feedback from the client, he had asked for weaknesses of this particular ident to be made in terms of the change for the logo by making it three seconds longer for the viewer to see so they get the brand recognition and the time to read the channel's name as well.

iv. Quality Management; (meeting to discuss the production quality and fitness for purpose of each of the idents)

I would say that the quality of management was good at this point since everyone knew of what they were doing exactly like for example: the editors of Lawrence and James knew that the idents had to be done and posted on the site of Weebly on the deadline.

v. Teamworking; (weekly team log of contributions and managements of the production)

For the suite of idents, the people who were in charge of getting the final version done was Lawrence and James in which they are nearly done with the editing of these since they have been working on it after we had finished with the production stage a few week before and during the half-term as well.

Unit 5 and 32: Task 6B

Task 6b) Write a series of reports – each of your will take a section each to deliver

Explain what you have tried to accomplish through the suite of idents (Rosie)

Through the suite of idents our team has accomplished using new skills such as stop motion and animation which at time we found difficult and time consuming. Our target audience which we had to base our ideas on were 15-19 year olds. This means that our suite of idents has to be suitable to these ages and engaging for them to watch. This could be shown through the visuals in the ident for instance a group of students competing in a fashion show. I feel that our team made our suite of idents based on the theme of community which is encouraging for young people and gives a good identity of the college of being filled with different groups of people from different backgrounds showing that they accept everyone. During our first meeting with our client will negotiated some changes such as the duration of the idents which were first decided to be 30 seconds but we thought this was too long for an ident and negotiated with  the client to be 10-15 seconds. We were given a deadline which we made a schedule around where we made an ident per day we also gave ourselves a week to ident all four and animate which we met for the deadline.

Picture
Here is a screen shot from one of our idents showing how we animated the video using the colour purple. We believe this was an ideal choice of colour cos it collaborated well with the college logo which is the colour purple.

How have you worked to try to achieve what you set out to do - explain decisions made with detailed examples from own work (Lawrence)

We made the decision as a team to use stop-motion for our suite of idents. In order to master this technique and produce creative and high quality idents, we had to practice stop-motion. I also had to practice animating over stop motion because I was the team's animator and it was a time consuming process since for example all the logos and text that are included in all my idents were drawn over again and again through a process called onion skinning which allows me to draw over what I have previously drawn over but positioned differently so that the text looks as if it was alive and moving. I liked the onion skinning process because it allowed me to maintain the shape and quality of the idents. The logo was circular but it wasn't exactly drawn accurately but I had the option of tracing the logo but it would look boring, so I chose to hand-draw the logo because it would seem better and it would be more creative and youthful. I was comfortable with the decision I made after drawing.

Picture

All of our idents had the text of the channel moving after it was sketched in and though it was a time consuming process it did convey the brand identity of our ident as well given the erratic movement of the animation which connotes enthusiasm, youth, and joy. I think I did well in showing this in our suite of idents. I decided to do this because I wanted the pace of the letters to match the pace of the stop-motion making it look more dynamic especially in the fashion show since it had the most movement the visuals of the fashion show ident was terrible and unprofessional because it was out of focus but unfortunately, there wasn't enough time to re-shoot the ident. In addition, the original location for the production of the fashion show ident was the hall but it was occupied unfortunately so we decided to use the green room because it was the only room that was available to us.

Picture

In order to tackle this issue of transforming the ball in the football ident, I decided to draw over the ball so that in each frame within one second had an animation of the ball morphing into the logo as per the storyboard because I think it would look better if I had drawn over the ball. When I attempted this, I was amazed at myself because it worked and people could also see the logo so it was recognizable as an ident. It was much easier and I didn't know or have Adobe after effects at home to further polish the idents but I made the decision of carrying on with drawing in the logo because it would be faster and everything has already been shot and it was bad enough that I had to animate every frame of all four idents.

Picture

We wanted our idents to be entertaining. We made the decision that the logo was going to be sketched in all four idents and the logo was going to hold in place for three seconds. We thought it would be better to reveal the logo and then disappear but the fast paced edit would make the logo appear quickly and then disappear instantly so we decided not to do that because according to the client's feedback in one of our idents he stated that the logo was unclear since it was there for literally a split second and he suggested that the logo has to be on screen and hold for at least three seconds in order for the audience to recognise the ident as an ident otherwise the created product would be deemed as unfit for purpose.

Evaluate how you conducted your roles (Daniel S-Individual)

As a producer within the Group for the production team I-Watch, I do feel that I have done decent enough job for the team by making sure the paperwork was done before we went into production of making the suite of idents which the theme was based around community so the idents needed to be mostly the same across all four which does include that it has the conventions, an tone and brand identify as well. I would say that the strengths of handing the team was that I made sure that the team knew of what they were doing in terms of what needed to be done because the client had set an deadline and not only that, I made sure that I booked the equipment and location whenever we were going to film the idents. Although overall, I do feel that I could have done better by making sure like for example: I should have booked the locations on time before we could actually go and make the idents so in a way as a team, we should not be wasting the time of asking the staff to see if we could use the room to film our suite of idents. Also when we were going to be filming the football ident, I was meant to book out the kit to use for the ident but I had not done this before the lesson so during the lesson, I had to ask the PE staff to borrow it.

Evaluate the success of the process or responding to the brief and the effectiveness of your group organisation - informed by the feedback of others (James)

I would say in conclusion that as a team, everyone felt that we did okay as we knew of what needed to be done for the written work while making the suite of idents for the client who had set it with the deadline which was one of the strong point of our management as we had the producer checking on us to see if the others did the work or not. One of weaknesses was our group's Organization where even though it was okay at times, there was issues that had surfaced during the making of the idents like for example: Daniel S who was the producer had lost the SD card where it had the footage of the rough cut version of the hands ident that we did outside of the lesson and we had to do it all over again which did set it back a little bit, however, although this set us a little behind, we regrouped excellently and then managed to finish off the other idents that had to be shot within the planned suite, we did this well and were soon back on schedule. Once the suite had been fully shot, it was time to start the post production stage, this took a large amount of time as we animated the idents individually after editing them on final cut pro turning them in to stop motion, this took time, however, we understood that it would take time as it is a slow process, we finished doing the editing stage and the animating stage within a fortnight.

Explain the changes made to the ident resulting from various constraints and unforeseen challenges. (Daniel Storey)

When it does to making the idents for the client, there are going to be various constraints and challenges that will come up so as a group, we need to solve them as quickly as possible since there is a deadline that needs to meet. The first constraint that we were faced with not getting any actors who have different backgrounds since the theme of suite of idents is based around community so if we had to put the idents onto the CTK YouTube channel, then it is completely possible that we could face some backlash from the the intended target audience for not being diverse at all so this falls under an ethical constraint. Also, Diversity is needed as in this college we need different cultures as well since in the idents it is not going to represent everyone so within the making of the ident, we needed to use ourselves to represent the college.

Second issue that we did faced was the use of green screen room as even though we had scouted the location to use to film the idents: hands, photography and fashion show, there was other group of students that wanted to film there as well so in a way we had to share the room with them but when we needed the lighting for the set-up, some of it was getting used so we had to work around it to prevent this from happening.

Third issue that was resulting within making the suite of idents was the soundtrack as we needed to make sure it was same one throughout as if we had to change it within the idents, then you will break the continuity so it does fall under copyright since we would need to get permission from the owner to use it but at this point we would need to pay for it.

Finally, the final thing that I had deal with is the location to film the fashion show ident to complete the filming of the suite because I went to the reception to see if I can book it out but I couldn't do this since there was going to be exams taking place within the room so we chose to film it in the green room instead.

Fashion Show Ident.

Task 4C: Constraints

Legislation & regulation or technical broadcast constraints (copyright issues and where you will sources these from, technical broadcast requirements colour safe and resolution, Permissions and Shooting Licences)

Release Form

For the actors that we are going to be part of the idents, we will get permission that we can upload the idents for the YouTube channel of Christ The King by making sure that they sign the actor release form so we can avoid the trouble from someone if we didn't get their permission after complaining as through the Human Rights Act 1998, we need to make sure that we need to respect their private life. Since we are filming in an college where there are a lot of minors so we need to get their content so they can walk around in the background and need to make sure that we give out the right image for the students as it does avoid defamation where the information is not completely untrue all which they will not able to get their future job that they have dream of doing.

Shooting Licence

Second thing that we need to consider is the shooting licence in order to shoot on the location that the director has chose to film for the suite of idents although the locations are going to be on site of the college, I will need to each of the sports hall, main hall and green room by getting permission to film there which it is should fine to do this as a group, we are following the production plan where the deadline is 26th May 2017.

Broadcast Safe Colours

During the making the suite of idents we will need to consider the broadcast safe colours because during the broadcast on the television, they have a set of colours that they can use so it can add to the quality of what is being seen but if the television company had to use different colours instead, then it will affect the quality.

Ethical Constraints

In terms of the ethical constraints and issues, we made sure as a group that the ideas and themes were not coming across as offending for the audience in any particular way like for example: their gender, background and religious beliefs but there is an act that the media companies and organisation which is The Equally Act (2010) where, it does protect people from discrimination within the workplace since it does set for not mistreating people in an bad way.

To avoid from breaking this act, we will make sure that the actors are from the different ethic background and genders.

Task 4C: Kit Booking

Kit Booking: Equipment Manager needs to sign it off

The image above is the documentation of equipment of what is needed to make the suite of idents for the YouTube channel of Christ The King but we only need now is the equipment manager to sign it off so we are able to use the equipment before the date that we need to hand it back to him although if we lose any of the equipment, then we would have to pay for an brand new one since they own it for other students within the college who may need to do this.

Risk Assessment (Task 4C)

Task 4C) Crew Roles and Skills Profiling

Daniel Storey: Producer
Skill Profiling: Organised

Rosie Hellawell: Director
Skills Profiling: Leader

James White: Director of Photography/Camera Operator
Skills Profiling: Creative

Lawrence: Assistant Director
Skills Profiling: Helpful

Production Diary-Task 5B

Diary (24th April 2017)

Before we had the meeting with the client, we made sure that everyone was doing the work that was done so we can put it as an portfolio for David Pearson to see during the pitch and also we had come up with ideas for the suite of idents with the theme being community.

Meeting deadlines; (weekly diary of progress to schedule)

We had been working on this production plan a week before so we could meet the deadline of the next day and we felt that the ideas were good enough so we got feedback from sir which he felt the same as well but he told us to make sure that the ideas had brand identify, tone, visual style, colour and same consistant for the theme.

Quality management; (meeting to discuss the production quality and fitness for purpose of each of the idents - what will be discussed/renegotiated with client before production starts)

In terms of the production plan that was done before the pitch, it was: the production budget, production plan with timescale, treatment for the suite of idents, designs, potential problems and potential problems but these responsibilities were given to different people within the group. We discussed as a team in terms of what should be seen within the ideas after getting feedback in the class.

Team-working; (weekly team log of contributions and management of the production)

I felt that as a team, we were working well within the group by making sure that the work was done before the deadline.

25th April 2017

As a group, we had finalize our ideas in terms of what were the ideas for the suite of idents for the YouTube channel of Christ The King while keeping the same theme so it does remain consistent since we are going to pitch to the client.

Meeting deadlines; (weekly diary of progress to schedule)

Before we met with the client for the pitch, we made sure that the work was into an portfolio in terms of what was required for the client to see for himself so he could ask some questions about it as we would clarity to him in detail.

Quality management; (meeting to discuss the production quality and fitness for purpose of each of the idents - what will be discussed/renegotiated with client before production starts)

During the pitch with the client we discussed about the duration of the suite of idents in which, we said that it was going to be 10-20 seconds long where the client was completely fine about this as we talked about this the first time around where our and other groups met with him which he said that it was okay with the suite of idents being under 10-20 seconds long. In terms of our ideas, the whole group spoke about this while covering the things that we needed to talk about to the client which was: production plan with timescale, budget, solutions, problems and designs of the logo that will appear in the suite of idents.

Team-working; (weekly team log of contributions and management of the production)

I would say that as a team, we did work very well as the whole group did contribute to the pitch within the timescale of 6 mintue.

2th May 2017

On this day, we had recevied feedback from sir in terms of the portfolio that we had given to the client to see during the pitch and not only that I had come with the idea for the fourth ident since the others had come up with a idea but I couldn't come up with one so Lawrence came up with the fashion show idea and he gave to me.

Meeting deadlines; (weekly diary of progress to schedule)

As a team we did meet the deadline in terms of handing the work in on time but however the work was at an poor look for which, we were disappointed with this as it could have been better.

Quality management; (meeting to discuss the production quality and fitness for purpose of each of the idents - what will be discussed/renegotiated with client before production starts)

When the meeting with sir took place, some of the work that we did could have been better like for example: the treatment for the suite of ident's ideas wasn't written clearly so he gave it an NYA grade as there was no theme, visual style, tone, colour and brand identify. The design of the logo was given an NYA grade as it wasn't consistent of what we said during the pitch but everything else that we did was given the grade of Pass and not only that, everyone in the group was at fault for the contribution towards the making of the production plan.

Team-working; (weekly team log of contributions and management of the production)

When it did come to working as a team, I felt that we did work okay but we all know that the work could have been improved to an higher level than expected but also we needed to communicate a lot more than we were before since we are going into production to make the idents

12th May 2017

As a team, we filmed the first ident of the four which was the hands idea in the green room but it was done in stop motion by taking pictures on the camera that we had hired out.

Meeting deadlines; (weekly diary of progress to schedule)

Since we had to meet the deadline of 26th May, we needed to start filming the idents as we could miss the deadline by not handing it on time since we are in production.

Quality management; (meeting to discuss the production quality and fitness for purpose of each of the idents - what will be discussed/renegotiated with client before production starts)

As the producer, I had to make sure that I booked out the green room and equipment of camera and tripod by seeing the manager who keeps it for students to use for their coursework although, I needed to book these things in advance so it does avoids not filming at all. Also the whole group needed to show up to do the shooting in which they did compared to other day (wednesday 10th May) as I was only one within the group to show up on that day.

Team-working; (weekly team log of contributions and management of the production)

As a team, we work together very well to get the filming of the first ident done as we needed to meet the deadline so in the next week, we are going to be filming the next two idents.

15th May 2017

On Monday, we had a slight setback during the production stage where I made an error where I had lost the SD card that had the footage of the rough cut version of the hands idents and Barton was annoyed with us as we had film nothing during the lesson.

Meeting deadlines; (weekly diary of progress to schedule)

Even though the schedule is the deadline of 26th May, we were pushed back slightly since there was an error within the team.

Quality management; (meeting to discuss the production quality and fitness for purpose of each of the idents - what will be discussed/renegotiated with client before production starts)

The quality management at this day was very poor as I had lost the SD card that had the footage of the rough cut version of hands ident which was my responsibility so I have let down the team completely for this mishap.

Team-working; (weekly team log of contributions and management of the production)

There was no team-working on this day at all since we didn't do anything at all during Barton's lesson at all.

16th May 2017

On this day, we filmed the hands, photography and football ident by using the green room during the afternoon and while in Barton's lesson, we used the sports hall although we did run into some issues where I didn't book out the kit and room before the lesson.

Meeting deadlines; (weekly diary of progress to schedule)

After filming the three idents of hands, photography and football, we are completely on schedule to meet the deadline of 26th May to hand in the idents for the client to review so he can decide to see who's idents from different groups including us to put on the CTK YouTube channel.

Quality management; (meeting to discuss the production quality and fitness for purpose of each of the idents - what will be discussed/renegotiated with client before production starts)

Before Barton's lesson, I was meant to book out the sports hall and kit so we could film the football ident on time but I had forgot to do this so he was sightly concerned about this. Since James who was one of the editors, he was going to be editing the first two idents in the Mac room while myself, Lawrence and Rosie went to find out if the sports hall was available and see if we could use an spare PE kit and football to make the football ident since I had booked out the equipment earlier to make the photography ident. After speaking with one of the PE staff, he did allowed us to use the sports hall to film the football ident and also borrowing the spare PE kit and football as well.

Team-working; (weekly team log of contributions and management of the production)

Although I was at fault not booking out the sports hall, not getting the spare PE kit and football before Barton's lesson, as a group we worked as a team to get some of the editing done and film the two idents before the end of the lesson in which we did do this.

18th May 2017

After we finished our media lesson in the afternoon, we filmed the fourth ident which was the fashion idea so we could be completed with the production.

Meeting deadlines; (weekly diary of progress to schedule)

Aftering finishing filming the fourth ident on this day, we are on schedule to meet the deadline of 26th May to hand in the suite of idents to the client but we needed to make sure that these idents had an sense of brand identify, colour and tone as well.

Quality management; (meeting to discuss the production quality and fitness for purpose of each of the idents - what will be discussed/renegotiated with client before production starts)

As a group, we discussed about when we should shoot the fourth ident as we needed to more editing in terms of using the software Adobe Photoshop for retroscoping the idents to make it look more interesting for the target audience that we are trying to appeal to.

Team-working; (weekly team log of contributions and management of the production)

As a team, we made sure that we got the fourth ident done since Lawrence and James will need to start editing the suite of idents to ensure that they met the deadline of 26th May which it needed to be on Weebly where it should be finished along with the written reports that are on our blogs as well.

19th May 2017

On this day, the group had post-production where James had finished with his part of the editing by making sure that the suite of idents were in stop motion and after he had done this, he gave all of the stop-motion footage to Lawrence so he should start retroscoping the four idents although we disscused about improving the written work for next week's deadline.

Meeting deadlines; (weekly diary of progress to schedule)

In terms of meeting the deadlines, we are on schedule to meeting the required deadline of Friday 26th May 2017 where all of the work needed to be handed in.

Quality management; (meeting to discuss the production quality and fitness for purpose of each of the idents - what will be discussed/renegotiated with client before production starts)

As I said above on the introduction, we discussed about improving the report of Task 2B as before we got an NYA grade for this so we looked at other groups' work of how they did this and we took note of this and how we can improve our work.

Team-working; (weekly team log of contributions and management of the production)

I would say that the team knew what needed to be done in terms of the work being handed in on time to meet the deadline for next week.

Friday 26th May 2017

On this occassion, we had got all of the wrriten work from task one to four of Unit 5/32: Working To An Brief and Ident Production done by putting it on Weebly by which it did include the improvement of the report of Task 2B over the week where as before, we got an NYA Grade for this. Although there was an slight change of plan of handing in Task 5 and 6 in which, it did included the suite of idents as well as Mr Barton had told us on Wednesday that he wanted it done by the 9th of June.

Meeting deadlines; (weekly diary of progress to schedule)

As a team, we made sure that the work that we have done for both of the units was done and put on Weebly for our teacher to see so he can mark the work over the half-term and since the deadline for the suite of idents had changed, we are still on schedule to hand in the work.

Quality management; (meeting to discuss the production quality and fitness for purpose of each of the idents - what will be discussed/renegotiated with client before production starts)

I would say that the quality management was completely good as we didn't have any problems with the work (Task 2B) that needed to be handed in since we had improved it over the last weekend and during the week as well.

Team-working; (weekly team log of contributions and management of the production)

As the editing work was still going on, Lawrence and James are working together to get it done before the 9th June deadline in which myself and Rosie would check up to see how they are getting with it and seeing if they needed some extra help so the team's chemistry was there during this day and everyone knew what they are doing exactly.
