Editor's Log (Unit 2)

Editor's Log for my 1 minute Short Film (Paranoia)

As an editor, I have imported the scenes into the editing software of Final Cut Pro where there is screen-grabs of the footage that I have got which it is showing evidence that I have got out to film the sequences that is required for my short film which is being shown in on the first screenshot. I have the footage into two bins of the location including the certain part of it which my production went to film the short film so when putting the footage into the right bins will make easier for myself to put the correct footage of the order of the way that my short film.

Here on the left of the second screenshot is all of the possible shots that I could use for my short film but as I am in the post-production stage of film-making, it is important to make sure that I do label it as either good or bad and including the shot type in initials so it does not take. The main reason behind this is because so yourself can look at the footage and decide what is a good or bad take within the clip but making sure by deciding where you are put the clip within the sequence so the film will make for the audience that are going to watch the film like, for example: usually you would have a master shot that may set the tone for your film which could be put in the beginning to show the location of the short film.

Here on the third screenshot, I have created an XML file of my edit for my one minute short film so another person can make it better by using different special effects and adding soundtrack (to make the film more interesting for the audience) that are going to watch it for the first time.

To see the coding of the Final Cut Pro on Microsoft Excel, first thing that you do by clicking on file and exporting as an XML file and saving it, it will appear on the desktop area. Then you will have to right click the file and open it through Excel so you can see the coding of the edit of my short film. The main reason you may want to save as an XML file, it is because you can carry on with editing your short film of where you left from through using a different computer that has an editing software like, for example: Final Cut Pro.

Paranoia (My Short Film: Unit 2)

Rough Cut (Draft):

Final Version:

Final Proposal (Resubmission)

Proposal Structure

1.Introduction

The whole purpose of this report is to get the pitch done and delivered it to the producers so I can get my idea for my short film across to create an impression to see if it will work or not because I feel that my idea is good enough but the name of my short film that I want to make is called Paranoia which the genre of it will be a thriller because it will contain mystery and suspense for the audience but my main idea is to sell the short film to the producers by using the theory of Unique Selling Point (USP) because I need to persuade them that my short film is going to be very good and interesting to watch.

2. Film Synopsis and my influences

My short film is going to be about where a detective comes to a scene of murder of a dead person with a flower with a note on the body which he opens to see what it says but the camera shot goes to the face of the detective reacting to the note.

The hook is going to be where a detective finds the lifeless body on the floor in the woods which the twist is going to be when the detective finds a flower and a note on the body after uncovering it which he opens to see an sentence being written to saying something that the audience can't find out at all as the camera shot will change to a close up of his reaction.

My influences for my short film are the film and television programme of Zodiac and Dexter so I can put with my own idea for my one minute short film and not copying an original idea. Although there is a film of Zodiac which is based on the true story of the famous killer, there is have been online articles on the Killer of how this person left a famous signature after killing couples in certain locations which the cases of the murders in the Untied States Of America have been unsolved by the police and with Dexter, there was a character who works with the Miami police as a forensics expert but at the same time, he is a serial killer who kills criminals who he thinks that got a way with justice.
3. Film Rating

The rating for my short film will be a 15 because it will contain violence of the stabbing and blood involved in it as well by which it fits the guideline of BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) rating for 15 films that are shown in the United Kingdom but if this is depending on if I was sent the film to them to give a certification for it.

4. Primary Research

In the primary research phase, I looked at different short films that were in a playlist to which there was a link to it so we can not only watch to the video of it but to find out who are target audience for the short films. As I looked through the comments of each short film, there was no teenagers who commented but only Adults who seemed to like the short films through the playlist of short film videos. This is only showing that the main target audience of these short films are adults who are at the age of 18 plus rather than teenagers who are the secondary audience to watch these type of films because the teenagers would want to see movies at the cinema and be entertained by it but as for adults, they would like to watch films that are not that long at all.

I looked at the short thriller/horror films to see who are going to be my target audience to show my short film to by looking through the comments from the actual video itself.

This the Youtube channel of Michael Evans who starred and directed the short film of 2AM: The Smiling Man but he does have around 21,754 subscribers. He usually make either thriller or horror short films so the subscribers will be able to watch different short films that is released by Evans.

Smiling Man

This is the first short film that I looked that called 2AM: The Smiling Man by Michael Evans who starred and directed this as well. The genre of this short film is a thriller as there is conventions of suspense and tension throughout the film. It has over 3.7 million view and has got around 29.4 thousands likes which is showing that this is one of the popular short films in the playlist.

This was a comment that was left by Digscomics who seem to like this short film of 2AM: The Smiling Man who seemed to enjoy this short film as it had the elements of a thriller film.

There is a equal amount of male and females who tune in to watch the videos that are uploaded on the YouTube channel of Michael Evans which it is telling us that they enjoy and like watching thriller short films.

5. Secondary

Since the possibly of the target audience is going to be adults at the age of 18 and over who like watching short films rather than movies that teenagers like to watch while being entertained, so I decide to research where they would go to watch to these short films which I discovered it was a festival that is held in different parts of the United Kingdom like for example: London, Manchester, Leeds etc. A short film festival is where it is organised for people to watch different types of short films that is shown in one or more screening of it but some of these festivals are based on a certain director or the genre of it like for example: Thriller or Horror etc.

6. Summary

In conclusion, the main target audience for these short films is adults who are at the age of 18 or over as they are going to different film festivals in London, Edinburgh etc to see different feature and short films for their films to be recognition from the business people who may get in contact with you as they may want to promote or possibly show it in different countries but with teenagers, they are the secondary target audience because they will go to the cinema and watch a movie from different genres of thriller, horror or action to be only entertained by it. Also, there is an equal amount of male and female who seem to enjoy the short films from the genre of thriller as they liked the tension and suspense that is created within the film for the audience but the way I could prove this is where I looked through the videos that was in the videos on YouTube on a playlist.

7. USP

USP (Unique selling point) is the victim's body with the flower and a note as it is leaving an meaning for the audience to interpreter of what could happen next in the film if they are interested to see it but since the genre of the actual short film is thriller, there will need to have mystery and suspense within the film because if it does not have these conventions in it then, the film could become boring and predictable to watch for the audience who just gain an interest in the short film but when I am pitching it to the producers, I will need to persuade them by being passionate about that this will be one of the short films to be made out of the competition that I face. The trends in this short film is the detective

My short film is going to be my own idea because I gain influences that to make this which makes this film more interesting and rather than coping an original idea that some else has come up with. The actual narrative of this short film will be an linear structure so it will have a equilibrium (beginning), sub-equilibrium (Middle) and resolution (Ending) so if the film is going to have this structure then the editing style that is going to be used is Continuity and discontinuity as I am going to break the 180 degree rule within the line of action.

8. Budget

Going off the budget of Zodiac that cost $65 million dollars to make and made around $33 million dollars in the United States of America on the date of 3rd May 2007, my short film is going to be a low budget as the equipment is going to be provided by the college. The reason why the budget is 65 million dollars is because they did not know that if this film was going to be successful in the box office despite it going to based on a true story which in actual fact, the film was successful and was heap with positive reviews which could happen with myself if I send to my short film of Paranoia to a short film festival like London or Edinburgh since my film is going to be a low budget.

Budget: Between £30 or £40

Food that feeds the production crew (the different food stores that I may buy from, for example: Poundland or 99p Store): £20
Props and the makeup for the victim: £15
Camera and Tripod is going to be provided by the college
Mac Suite (Facilities) will be used at anytime at the college
Transportation: Free with the bus as I have a Oyster Zip Card but may have to pay for a train if I take it to different locations that I am going to shoot my short film: £10.00

9. Regulations

The regulator that is going to be looking at my short film is BBFC (or known as British Board of Film Classification) who are non-profit Organization that give certificate ratings to different films that is shown across the United Kingdom. As I am distributing it to the short film festival, I will not need to send it to them but if did then I would send to them and give it an certification for it depending on what guideline it falls under.

10. Changes of idea

The revisions that had to made was the idea for my short film because it could have been too long to show and had to be a minute worth of footage but although it could have worked if it was shorter but also, the whole story-line of my short film due to the fact I could reveal a key information that could make the film predictable and boring to watch for my target audience.

11. Locations

The known location for my one minute short film will be in the woods in the local area as it will fit with the genre of thriller where it will create tension and suspense for the target audience which is not teenagers but instead it is adults who are at the age of 18 or over.

12. Distribution

This short film will be distributed into YouTube as part for our coursework but it is also being distributed to film festivals by submitting through either an online format or writing an form and send to the festival which business people can watch it because they may gain an interest of the film and contract me to see if they are able to show it in different countries for example: United States of America, Japan, Italy etc, but the way it can get people's attention is to promote and advertise it on TV. For online, it is going to be distributed to Netflix where they it can noticed a lot easily compare to short film festivals which can show over 150 short and feature films.

13. Conclusion

In conclusion, my idea is an short thriller film called Paranoia where my influences are the film of Zodiac and television series of Dexter to show the producers that I have come up with my own ideas and not coping any elements that is used in my influences, so I have to do my research on these two influences which I put into an portfolio. With the equipment being provided by the college to go out to film the short film, the overall budget will be around £30 or £40 which I am going to take out off my own money so it keeps the whole production crew motivated to keep filming until they get their food that they wanted to eat. During the primary research phase, I was looking at the thriller and horror short film playlist on Youtube to see who is my target audience is which I find out it was adults as I was looking at the comments there was no teenagers that were commenting on each of the short films but in the secondary, I did find out that the adults go to short film festivals to see if the promoters are interested in promoting the short film that caught their attention by contracting the maker of the film and asking if they can promote the film in different countries.
